Stephen T. Clifford is a third generation native of Bakersfield, having been born here in November 1940. After graduating from Bakersfield High School, he attended the University of California at Davis, graduating in 1963 with a degree in Agriculture Production. Mr. Clifford then attended the University of California at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco, where he obtained his LLB in 1966. During his law school years he worked as a seaman for Chevron Shipping Company out of Richmond, California, aboard tankships calling at various ports, including Wake Island, Samoa, Tahiti and Alaska.
Upon graduation from Hastings, Mr. Clifford returned to Bakersfield and began practice as an associate in December of 1966 with the firm of Raymond & Noriega, the predecessor of his current firm.
Mr. Clifford has enjoyed an active and diverse civil practice for over four decades and is individually “AV” rated by Martindale-Hubbell. His practice includes tort and business litigation, medical and hospital negligence cases, defense of attorneys, architects, other professionals, and defense of product liability and railroad litigation. Mr. Clifford has tried over 80 cases to verdict in cases spanning the breadth of the firm’s litigation practice.
Mr. Clifford is a 42-year-member of the California State Bar and the Kern County Bar Associations; past recipient of the Kern County Bar Association’s Bench and Bar Award (1988); Past President of the San Joaquin Valley Chapter, American Board of Trial Advocates [ABOTA]; a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers; a member and Past Director of the Northern California Defense Counsel; Defense Research Institute; the International Association of Defense Counsel; and National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel. He has been a member of the Bakersfield Rotary Club since 1971; he is a past member of the Board of Directors of Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield, and has been a member of the Board of Directors of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital since 1992.
