Matthew S. Collom was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but considers Bakersfield home to him and his family. A graduate of Liberty High School, Matt attended Bakersfield College before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles. At UCLA Matt joined the United States Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) while earning a Bachelor of Arts in History. After graduation, Matt was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army where he served four years as a platoon leader and assistant to battalion staff.
Matt earned his law degree from Michigan State University, College of Law in East Lansing, Michigan. While still a law student, Matt worked as a student-lawyer for the Washtenaw County Public Defender’s Office and later as a student-clinician at MSU’s Alvin L. Storrs Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic. In both positions, Matt helped his clients pursue positive legal outcomes. After deciding to return to Bakersfield, Matt clerked for Clifford & Brown before joining the firm’s litigation practice.
